As of March 2021, Storetasker supports a third payment type for Experts and their clients.
In addition to our standard project quote and recurring subscription options, we're introducing Bills. Bills are a 1-time payment option built to reduce friction between Expert and client and increase Expert earnings by reducing the number of steps it takes to receive payment for hourly work that you've already agreed upon with your client.

Here's a quick introduction to Bills from Sam with more Do's, Don'ts and important things you should know below:

What do Bills Do?
If you and your client have already agreed upon an hourly rate and time estimate for a project, but you did not send an official quote to receive payment upfront, you can send a client a 1-time Bill once you have completed the work.
When to use Bills
Bills should only be sent once an hourly rate and specific arrangement is established with the client and the work is completed. Experts should not expect to get paid for their time unless they have an Accepted Quote or have an established agreement on an hourly rate with a client before working on a project and then sending a Bill afterward. Here are four use cases where bills can help expedite payment and reduce friction with your clients:
- If a client's project requires an extended amount of investigation or troubleshooting work before you can generate an accurate quote or agree to take on said project, you can agree on an hourly rate with the client to charge for investigation time and send them a Bill upon completion. Quotes can still be used for this purpose as well.
- If a client requests additional features or add-ons to an already closed project, you can use a Bill to charge for your work once you complete the add-on work.
- If a client wants to hop on a call to discuss a project and you agree with the client before or during the call that it is a paid consultation, you can send a Bill afterward.
- If you take on a long-term project with a client and would like to receive payment after you complete pre-determined milestones without going through the regular quote accept flow for each milestone, you can use a project quote for the first milestone and a Bill after completing each additional project milestone. For example, if you broke a $10,000 website build into 5 parts, you can send a quote for "Website Build Part 1 of 5: $2,000" and a subsequent Bill for parts 2 through 5 as you complete them.
When NOT to use Bills
- You should never send a Bill without establishing an hourly rate and hourly arrangement with the client.
- You should not send a bill for the time you spend "closing the lead" if it is not something the client has agreed to. For example, if you spend 45-minutes investigating the problem in order to generate a quote, you should not Bill for that time regardless of whether the quote is accepted or not. In this scenario, you can agree on an hourly rate for investigation time and Bill your client for the time once you complete your investigation.
- You should never send bills for a project up-front. You should always use a quote for this scenario.
